Part II

NARRATIVE SUMMARY

     2d CAG ceased combat operations and deactivated during this reporting period. On 1 May, Combined Action Companies 2-7 and 2-4 were deactivated with appropriate ceremonies. The remaining operating units, Combined Action Company 2-3, had light contact with the enemy. Most contacts were indirect fire incidents occurring in Dien Ban District. On 7 May, CACO 2-3 ceased operations and was deactivated with appropriate ceremonies. 2d CAG Headquarters continued to turn in garrison property and organic equipment, prepare final reports and process personnel for redeployment. At 1000 on 11 May 2d CAG was deactivated with appropriate ceremonies attended by Colonel LE TRI TIN, Quang Nam Sector Commander, Colonel G.C. TUCKER, USA, Province Senior Advisor, Lieutenant Colonel T.M. GUNNELS, USAF, OIC of Lopez FAC's, and Father NGUYEN THANH TRI, Catholic priest Cam Ha Village as Honored Guests. The final 100 personnel remaining with 2d CAG relocated to FLC (AT 951805) where final reports were submitted and all remaining equipment turned in to appropriate agencies. The final Unit Diary for 2d CAG will be submitted on 17 May 1971.

01 May 1971 CAP 2-3-6 ambush received (3) 60mm/82mm mortar rounds at grid BT 064593, 1 km N of Dien Ban District Headquarters. RESULTS: Negative.

01 May 1971 CACO 2-4, co-located with Hieu Nhon District Headquarters at grid BT 163575, CAP 2-4-1 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 185590, 2.1 km NE of Hieu Nhon District Headquarters CAP 2-4-3 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 173585, 1.2 km NE of Hieu Nhon District Headquarters, CAP 2-4-5 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 165573, .6 km S of Hieu Nhon District Headquarters and CAP 2-4-6 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 120580, 4.3 km W of Hieu Nhon District Headquarters, were deactivated with an appropriate ceremony. Deactivations were with the approval of CG, Third MAB.
01 May 1971 CAP 2-3-7 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 015577, 5 km W of Dien Ban District Headquarters was deactivated with an appropriate ceremony. Deactivation was with the approval of CG, Third MAB.
02 May 1971 CACO 2-3 co-located with Dien Ban District Headquarters at grid BT 065584, recieved (13) 82mm rounds from grid BT 040590. A suppressing fire mission was returned. RESULTS: Negative.

05 May 1971 CAP 2-3-4 ambush initated OWF on (1) VC with weapon at grid BT 110559, 4.1 km E of Dien Ban District Headquarters. The enemy fled NW without returning fire. A sweep of the area was nonproductive. Again at 060130H, CAP 2-3-4 ambush received M-26 grenades and B-40's from USEF at grid BT 108570, 3.9 km E of Dien Ban District Headquarters. Cap returned OWF causing the enemy to flee W. A sweep of the area disclosed (1) CHICOM grenade. During the contact (1) CAP PF was KIA and (4) CAP PF'S were WIA. RESULTS: (1) PF KIA, (4) PF WIA(E) and (1) CHICOM grenade destroyed.
07 May 1971 CACO 2-3 co-located with Dien Ban District Headquarters at grid BT 065583, CAP 2-3-1 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 078585, 1 km E of Dien Ban District Headquarters, CAP 2-3-2 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 055605, 2.1 km NW of Dien Ban District Headquarters, CAP 2-3-3 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 040590, 2.3 km W of Dien Ban District Headquarters, CAP 2-3-4 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 085570, 2.3 km SE of Dien Ban District Headquarters, CAP 2-3-5 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 074556, 2.9 km S of Dien Ban District Headquarters, and CAP 2-3-6 with a geographic center of TAOC at grid BT 065593, 1 km N of Dien Ban District Headquarters, were deactivated with an appropriate ceremony. 11 May 1971 Headquarters, 2d CAG at grid BT 110575, 5.4 km W of Hieu Nhon District Headquarters was deactivated with an appropriate ceremony. Deactivation was with the approval of CG Third MAB.

2d CAG experienced no significant problem areas with Vietnamese or local FWMAF units during the reporting period.

6. Significant Accomplishments of Attachments

  2d CAG had five interpreters and one ARVN Liaison Officer assigned to its units during the reporting period. The interpreters continue to provide valuable services in the translation of documents and daily liaison with Vietnamese Military units and the civilian populace.

8. Logistics

   a. General:   2nd CAG continues to be categorized in a C-1 status under the MARES/FORSTAT Reporting System.

   b. Significant Events: On 12 May the 2d CAG Compound was turned over to Quang Nam Sector and remaining equipment stood-down at FLC. Equipment with disposition instructions was shipped to appropriate Commands. All other items of equipment were either declared unserviceable or shipped to MCSC Barstow, California.

   c. Damage to Weapons due to enemy action: None

   d. Motor Transport:   The Group Motor Transport drove a total of 5,652 miles during this reporting period.

   e. Airlifts:   Negative

   f. Messhall:   Approximately 2,250 meals were prepared during this reporting period in the 2d CAG Messhall. Of the above total approximately 1,050 meals were distributed to the troops in the field. The messhall served its final meal on 11 May 1971.

   g. Armory:   The Group Armory repaired a total of 42 weapons. No weapons were sent to 1st FSR for 3rd echelon maintenance.

   h. Supplies:: Supply records and documentation were shipped to 3d MAB for historical purposes.

   i. Miscellaneous Service:   Negative

   j. Problem Areas:   Negative

9. Civic Action/Psychological Operations

  a.   With the deactivation of 2d CAG and its subordinate units the CAG Civic Action Program ceased operation.

11. Intelligence:   Contact continued to be very light during this reporting period. The enemy appeared to be regrouping in preparation for the next highpoint of the K-850 Campaign. Enemy contact consisted of indirect mortar, rocket and grenade attacks.

15. Activations, Deactivations, Redesignations and Relocations of CAPs:

16. Special Services

     a.   2d CAG Special Services sent two people on three-day flights to Hong Kong and two people on one-day flights to Ubon, Thailand.

     b.   2d CAG distributed 100 cases of beer and soda during this reporting period.

     c.   Final audit procedures for disestablishment of 2d CAG Recreation Fund were completed and remaining money returned to HQMC.

17. Medical Department

     a. General

      (1) During this reporting period there were no personnel hospitalized. Most of this reporting period was spent verifying medical records of all CAG personnel. Immunizations for all personnel were brought up to date to ensure prompt and efficient transfer to CONUS.

      (2) Medical gear not requiring shipment to CONUS was turned over to the MILPHAP hospital in Hoi An, to Sub Unit 1, 1st Anglico based at ROKMC compound and some gear to U.S. Army units in the immediate vicinity.

      (3) There were no reports of animal bites during the reporting period.

      (4) MedCap at 2d CAG totaled 25.
