Dear Mr. and Mrs. Gallagher;

It is most difficult to express the deep sorrow felt by the Marines of Combined Action Company 2-7 over the recent death of your son, Lance Corporal Daniel F. Gallagher, U. S. Marine Corps, on September 10, 1970, in Quang Nam Province, Republic Of Vietnam.

Daniel was a member of Combined Action Platoon 2-7-2 of this company at the time of his death. He was with the other Marines in his platoon on September 10, 1970, at approximately 6:55 P.M., preparing to conduct a patrol when a weapon that he was carrying exploded. Daniel was killed instantly by the explosion.

Daniel will always be remembered by the Marines who had the opportunity to serve with him, in this company and in company 2-9, the company that he served with prior to joining company 2-7. He was courageous, competent, and respected for those qualities by his companions and superiors alike. I know that these words can do little to alleviate your great loss; but I hope that the knowledge that we share your loss will in some way be comforting to you.

If I may be of assistance to you in the future, please do not hesitate to write me.

Sincerely,

(signed)
R. M. MALLARD
Captain, U. S. Marine Corps
Commanding
